23 And 1/2 Things A Look Back

This has been a real long and incredible journey. When I first began this I did not think that I would be able to finish this journey. Something though happened as the assignments came in every week. I was actually looking forward to the challenges and trying to complete them in time so I could keep up when the new exercises were being posted. I needed a nudge from my manager to get started but I am glad I participated in this program. I knew some of the assignments already, being I am familiar with RSS and YouTube and so on. There were some I needed to learn from scratch. There are some that I know I will use in the future to help benefit my library experience. My favorite exercises were the bloglines, google docs, YouTube and Dopple Me. In the future to improve the program I would like for the assignments to start off a little easy. I believe that might have been what turned some people off to the program. Hopefully next year more people will join as the assignments become a bit easier to learn for the people who find all these terms as another language. In conclusion if there was another 23 and 1/2 things I would join without a doubt. It is beneficial to learn and can help us in our everyday assistance in helping Queens Library patrons. Great work.

Digital Media

I surfed around the Queens Library Digital Media catalog and found a couple of titles that I would be interested in downloading. I came across "Freakonomics". This is one book I always wanted to read but being it is on digital media, I figured I would just download it and try it out. There are alot of excellent titles available for anyone reading this blog. You can go to queenslibrary.org and click on digital media. There are diffrent topics to choose from and you can borrow them for 7 days.

Podcasting

Today I took a journey through Podcast Alley. It is a great site to listen to all soughts of podcasts with various different topics. I found a podcast that interested me which was called "Libraries Across Cultures", being that I am at work I was not able to hear it yet, but the description sounded real interesting. I added this podcast to my bloglines account and I am definetly going to look for more when I get the chance. The podcast is about how an outsider views the library, or someone who does not fit the perspective of a normal library user. I found a numerous amount of podcasts relating to libraries and education. This website is huge and it will take some time an effort to listen to all your favorite podcasts. Overall the site is real entertaining and very easy to navigate through.

RFID Technology

For the previous exercise I chose You Tube as my favorite site from the Web 2.o awards. I am not going to repeat myself for this blog but I did post a video referring to RFID technology. The video is from a library based in Seattle. I believe this is the direction our library wanted to go. Enjoy.

You Tube

I looked at the winners list from the Web 2.0 awards to see if one of my favorite sites was on it. I ended up finding it under Video. The site I love is You Tube. You Tube is a great place to upload videos about your self, make movies or just basically run your own TV channel for the world to see. It is also great if you missed shows on tv because you can look them up and watch them on your computer if you missed an episode. This site is useful because it is tough nowadays to have time to watch all these shows because we live busy lives. The great thing about You Tube is you can watch your program at anytime. Sadly I believe that most of the shows will be taken off because the networks are starting to show their own shows on their websites. They know they are competing with our attention and they are far behind. You Tube could be good for libraries to brush up on what is hot in entertainment because their is a counter that let's you know how many hits the video received. This is very helpful in ordering materials for your branch.

Google Docs

http://docs.google.com/Presentation?id=dqchtrg_0cz9rrd

Today I fiddled around with the Google docs and I must say it is very impressive. I would see why certain programmers of software would get worried about these websites. It is a powerpoint version with out the hassel of installing new software. It works just like powerpoint and it really is a breeze to use especially if you know powerpoint already. You can make presentations and then publish them on the web for the world to see. This is a very convienent program and I am thinking of using this in our workplace.

Top 10 Librarian Facebook Apps

I read the top apps for Facebook and there are alot of apps which seem fun to incorporate with Facebook. My favorite one is iRead, where you can have a list of books you read or are reading and you can rate them and write a review about the book. This is very helpful for circulation because if someone is interested by your review they may just go to the library and pick up the item. I also like the slide share app. With this app you can make powerpoint presentations and upload them to your Facebook account. This is real handy for Customer Service Specialists who work with powerpoint to brush up on their skills. A real fun one is LOLCats, with this app you can have many cat images with funny sayings to put on your page. This is good thing to add some humour to your page.

Wiki Manipulation

I viewed the list of wiki's from Wikipedia and one just stood out to me. It is called Lyricwiki.org. In this wiki you can find you favorite groups and look up the lyrics for their songs. You can even go in and change any mistakes the you feel were in the lyrics. You do not need a password or email address but the website does record your IP address. I decided to edit one of the lyric pages. It worked! The sentence did post succesfully. I am posting the page and what I added on this blog. The site is a lot of fun and I will visit it again.

Wikimania

I decided to take a look at the different types of Wiki's they have on the internet. A real good one that has relevance to the library is the Book Lovers Wiki. This wiki is really useful because you can see books that were read and reviews. This gives any reader useful insight from another reader and they are broken down by genres. You can always go in an edit the page if maybe you read the book and would like to add something to the review or maybe just post a new review yourself. To edit though, you do need a password and need to submit your email address. Right now there are not to many book reviews but I can see the potential for growth. I see myself referring to this site as well as others to make my job a bit more easy. I may post some of my book reviews as well to get familiarized with the web site.

Advancing With Learning 2.0

I read two articles today regarding Learning 2.0. One was from the Cool Librarian and the other was from the Library Journal. They both discussed the ups and downs of Learning 2.0. The problem I read with this new form of technology is that there is a consensus that nobody would want to get involve with this new technology. Nobody likes to read blogs and a lot of people do not know what half of these terms mean. In the article entitled "The Cart Before the Horse", this subject is brought up and tells about the hard times of a part time librarian. She is trying to implement all these new features but she keeps getting told that no one is interested in these features. I feel we all have a way to go before any of this stuff gets implemented. Our task as a library is to inform the patrons that wiki's and blogs and all these other services are good for students as well as adults. I know one day all these features will be used but I believe right now the vocabulary is not registering with the masses and it is our job to help them speak our language.

Tagging On QL Things

I took a look today at the QL L2.0 account on Del.icio.us website and clicked on a bookmark that was favorited by alot of users. I was able to view user notes posted by web surfers also I was able to see all the tags that were associated with this particular subject. The topic I picked was "Create a RSS feed for any web page". The site is real interesting and has a lot going on. This is one I will have to go back to in the future just because there is so much going on. This is a great site to learn from. I can see this as a good place to put all your bookmarks in one area. You can have all the websites you go to easily accesible to you. It would make a excellent tool for research assistance.

Technorati Fun

I just checked out the technorati site and there is so much to look at that you can not see everything in one session. This site takes time to navigate through. It is fun how you can search thru other peoples blogs and make the best sites that they like your favorite. I copied and pasted the Learning 2.0 page that I saw which was ours and right now we are ranked 795,643 in the blog rankings. I will keep checking as the 23 and a half things keeps rolling and see how far we make it to the top.

#14 Getting not-so-technical with Technorati6 hours ago
So now that you’ve been blogging for awhile, you might be wondering just how big the blogosphere is. Well, according to Technorati, the leading search tool and authority for blogs, the number of blogs doubles just about every 6 months with over 110 million blogs currently being tracked by the site. Yes, these numbers are astounding, but as you’ve already seen for yourselves, blogging is so easy that these publishing tools are being taken advantage of by almost every industry, including libraries. Tag! You're It!9 days ago
Tagging is an open and informal method of categorizing that allows users to associate keywords with online content (webpages, pictures & posts). Unlike library subject cataloging, which follows a strict set of guidelines (i.e.Library of Congress subject headings), tagging is completely unstructured and freeform, allowing users to create connections between data anyway they want. My Library Catalog

These are the books that I use in my life regarding topics I love to read about. I love technology and I have a myspace account and a You tube account. The site called "Library Thing" is easy to use and I have been locating books that I never heard of and then ordering them through my library. I like that you can keep your own catalog with photos and titles. I put my top five books on my blog to be viewed.

My Dopple Me Character!

I created a character using the Dopple Me image generator. It was very easy to do and I know if anyone has kids reading this blog, they would be entertained for hours. I pasted my character on this blog for all to see. I also put a link to the site so you know where you can create one also. Enjoy!
If you sign up with Dopple Me you have access to a whole lot of features so I recommend that you sign up.
